Mystery shopping is not a scam, but there are scammers who are using this line of work to swindle many people out of their money. There are red flags for potential scams. 1. Any promise of large amounts of money to complete mystery shopping assignments is a major indication of a scam. I am registered with over 40 companies, and I have never had to pay a dime to sign up. Mystery shopping is a real job. When is the last time you paid an employer to hire you? I would assume most of you would say never. 3. If a company sends you a large check or money order in advance for upcoming assignments, do not cash it. This is one of the biggest mystery shopping scams on the web. Mystery shopping companies rarely send advance payment for assignments. I am always paid after I complete an assignment, and usually it takes a month to receive payment. Some reputable companies may offer upfront payment for certain assignments that have numerable expenses. Mostly mystery shoppers who have established a good reputation with a company will be paid this way. This is not the norm. If you receive and cash a large check or money order, the scammers will have instant access to your bank account. They will use this information to remove any funds you have, and there will be no way to recover those funds.

Be smart and remain aware when signing up for mystery shopping companies. Do your research. An informed mystery shopper will be a prosperous mystery shopper.
